Getting to Julian from San Diego
Julian is 1 to 1.5 hours from downtown San Diego and about 2 hours from Orange County, usually via Highway 78 through Ramona and Santa Ysabel.
Highway 79 through Cuyamaca Rancho State Park is the scenic alternate. East of town, Highway 78 drops down Banner Grade into Anza-Borrego Desert.

Main Street has 1870s buildings, antique shops and bakeries.
Julian Pie Shops
Julian Pie Company is best known for apple crumb pie. Mom’s Pie House is the main rival, and Apple Alley Bakery also serves sandwiches.
Whole pies travel fine. Lines are shorter before 10 a.m.

Dudley’s Bakery in Santa Ysabel, on Highway 78, is known for fresh bread.
Day 1 Afternoon: Julian Gold Mine Tour and Local History
Gold was found in Julian’s creeks in 1869. The Eagle and High Peak Mine, at the top of C Street, runs guided tours of a hard rock gold mine.
The tour is hands-on and good for kids. Call ahead for seasonal tour times.
Julian Pioneer Museum
The volunteer-run Julian Pioneer Museum has mining tools and settlers’ belongings. Check its open days.

Day 2 Morning: Hiking Volcan Mountain and Cuyamaca Rancho State Park
Hike in the morning in summer.
Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve
The Volcan Mountain trail starts north of town at a stone gate designed by artist James Hubbell. It climbs through oak woodland to the summit, about 5 miles round trip.
Stonewall Peak in Cuyamaca
In Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, south of town, Stonewall Peak is about 4 miles round trip on switchbacks to a railed granite summit.
Day 2 Afternoon: Apple Picking, Cider and Wineries Near Julian
U-pick orchards usually open from late August into October, depending on the harvest. Check each farm first.
Wine and Cider in Julian and Wynola
Menghini Winery, just outside town, has picnic grounds. Wynola, a few minutes west, has small wineries, cider makers and farm stands, mostly open weekends.

Best Time to Visit Julian
Fall is peak season for the apple harvest. Winter may bring snow, spring is green and quiet, and summer is cooler than the inland valleys.
