This 3-day San Francisco itinerary is grouped by neighborhood: the waterfront and North Beach, then the bridge, Presidio and Lands End, then Golden Gate Park and the Mission.

Getting Around San Francisco Without a Car
Muni buses, streetcars and cable cars cover the city, and BART serves both airports and the East Bay. Pay with a Clipper card in your phone wallet.
Day 1: Ferry Building, Alcatraz and North Beach
Have breakfast at the Ferry Building Marketplace. The farmers market runs Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Walk the Embarcadero to Pier 33 for Alcatraz. The cellhouse audio tour is the highlight.
Telegraph Hill and North Beach
Climb the Filbert Street Steps to Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill, then walk down into North Beach.
Visit City Lights Booksellers and Caffe Trieste, then eat dinner. Tony’s Pizza Napoletana usually has a wait.
Day 2: Golden Gate Bridge, the Presidio and Lands End
Start at the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center and walk or bike onto the bridge.
Best Golden Gate Bridge Viewpoints
Battery Spencer on the Marin side has the classic view. H. Dana Bowers Vista Point, at the north end off 101, is easier to park.
On the city side, Fort Point sits under the south end, and the Palace of Fine Arts is nearby in the Marina.
Presidio Tunnel Tops and Lands End
Presidio Tunnel Tops is a park over the highway with bridge views. Lands End’s coastal trail runs through cypress to the Sutro Baths ruins, a sunset spot.
Day 3: Golden Gate Park and the Mission District
In Golden Gate Park, visit the Japanese Tea Garden, the de Young Museum (free tower observation deck), the California Academy of Sciences and the Conservatory of Flowers.
At the ocean end, the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden by the Dutch Windmill blooms in late winter and early spring.
Murals, Burritos and Dolores Park
In the Mission, walk Balmy Alley and Clarion Alley for murals, get a burrito at La Taqueria and a pastry at Tartine Bakery, then sit in Dolores Park.
Quiet San Francisco Viewpoints Locals Love
These hilltops have views like Twin Peaks and Coit Tower with fewer people. Most are reached by neighborhood staircases.

Easy Day Trips From San Francisco
Take the ferry to Sausalito, or drive 45 minutes to Muir Woods National Monument, which requires a parking or shuttle reservation. The Muir Woods and Sausalito day trip combines both.
Napa and Sonoma are 1 to 1.5 hours north; the Napa vs. Sonoma itinerary compares them. Point Reyes National Seashore has lighthouses, elk and Tomales Bay oysters.
Pulgas Water Temple
The Pulgas Water Temple near Woodside, 40 minutes south, is a stone temple over a reflecting pool. Opening days are limited; check the SFPUC site.
