Planning a Trip to Humboldt County
Five hours north of San Francisco the traffic thins out and the trees get absurd. Humboldt is the Avenue of the Giants, a fishing town harbor at Trinidad, and the Lost Coast where the highway gives up and turns inland.
What to Do in Humboldt County
Drive the Avenue of the Giants slowly
Thirty-one miles of old two-lane. Do not skip Founders Grove.
Look for elk at Elk Meadow
Roosevelt elk graze right beside the road north of Orick.
Walk Trinidad Head at golden hour
Short loop above sea stacks, chowder at the bottom of the hill.
Get out onto the Lost Coast
The drive to Shelter Cove is the event. Time the tides to walk it.
