Planning a Trip to Strawberry
A river, a lake and a ski hill within ten minutes of each other on Highway 108. Strawberry is the last cluster of cabins before the road climbs to Sonora Pass, which makes it the quiet way into this side of the Sierra: granite, big pines, and no valley traffic.
What to Do in Strawberry
Walk the loop around Pinecrest Lake
Four flat miles of shoreline, swimmable all summer, with kayaks and paddleboards for rent at the marina.
Carry on past the lake to Cleo’s Bath
Granite slabs and pools above the far end. Slow going over rock, so give it most of a day.
Pull over at Donnell Vista
Twenty minutes east on 108, looking straight down on the reservoir in its granite canyon.
Drive to Kennedy Meadows while the road is open
The last resort before Sonora Pass, and the way into the Emigrant Wilderness. It has been running pack trips since 1917.
Ski Dodge Ridge in winter
Ten minutes up the road at Pinecrest, and the reason the cabins here book out in February.
