Lake Tahoe is about 72 miles around. South Lake Tahoe has casinos, nightlife and Heavenly; the North Shore has small towns near Palisades Tahoe and Northstar.

South Lake has Heavenly Village, the Stateline, Nevada casinos and the most hotels, 20 to 30 minutes from Emerald Bay. The North Shore (Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Incline Village) is quieter.
Driving Times to Tahoe
About 3.5 hours from San Francisco without traffic, 2 from Sacramento and 50 minutes from Reno. I-80 reaches Truckee and the North Shore first; US-50 through Placerville reaches South Lake.

Where to Stay in Tahoe City, the West Shore and Truckee
Tahoe City has a walkable lakefront and the Truckee River bike path. Kings Beach and Tahoe Vista are casual beach towns.
Truckee, 20 minutes from the lake, has a historic downtown near Donner Lake and several ski areas.
