Orange County to San Diego Coastal Drive: Best Beaches and Hidden Pull-Offs
Drive the coast from Huntington Beach to La Jolla: the best beaches, tide pools, quiet pull-offs, and food stops on PCH and Coast Highway 101.

The coast drive from Huntington Beach to La Jolla is about 90 miles: PCH through Orange County, I-5 past Camp Pendleton, then Coast Highway 101 through North County San Diego.
This guide goes south town by town, with beaches, pull-offs, tide pools and food. Plan a full day or two.

How to Plan the Drive
Start early. Weekend PCH traffic through Newport and Laguna slows by mid-morning, and summer beach parking fills fast.
Late spring and fall weekdays are best. June brings a marine layer that usually clears by early afternoon.
Little Corona, Treasure Island and Torrey Pines are best at low tide, so check a tide chart. Most beach parking is paid, often by app.
Orange County: Huntington Beach to San Clemente
Budget at least half a day for Orange County, mostly around Laguna.
Huntington Beach and Bolsa Chica
Huntington Beach Pier is the place to watch surfers. Walk it early, then eat breakfast on Main Street.
Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, just north, has flat wetland trails with shorebirds and herons. Huntington State Beach has fire rings for legal bonfires; claim one early on summer weekends.
Newport Beach and Corona del Mar
On the Balboa Peninsula, the Wedge is a bodysurfing wave that gets huge on south swells. Watch from the sand, then take the Balboa Island Ferry for a frozen banana.
Corona del Mar is the best stretch of Newport for beaches. Inspiration Point on Ocean Boulevard is a quick overlook, Little Corona del Mar Beach has low-tide pools, and Pirates Cove sits below the bluffs at Corona del Mar State Beach.
Crystal Cove State Park
Crystal Cove is undeveloped coast between Newport and Laguna. Park at the Los Trancos lot inland of PCH ($15 a day) and walk under the highway to the Historic District’s restored 1930s cottages.
The Beachcomber serves breakfast by the sand, and the bluff-top Shake Shack is a local original, not the chain. The cottages book through ReserveCalifornia up to six months out and go fast.
Laguna Beach
Laguna has seven miles of coves and beaches. Heisler Park has a paved bluff walk with stairs to beaches and tide pools, and Victoria Beach has its castle-like tower.
Thousand Steps Beach is a steep stair climb, and Treasure Island Beach below the Montage has public access and tide pools. Crescent Bay, Shaws Cove, Divers Cove and Picnic Beach are covered in my Laguna Beach weekend guide.
Woods Cove, off Diamond Street and PCH, nearly disappears at high tide, so go at low tide.
Dana Point and San Clemente
Dana Point Harbor has whale watching (gray whales in winter, blue whales in summer) and the Ocean Institute. Salt Creek Beach has surf and a park above, and Strands Beach has a trail and funicular down the bluff.
San Clemente has a wooden pier and the flat San Clemente Beach Trail, about 2.3 miles along the tracks. South of town, San Onofre State Beach includes Trestles, a 20-minute walk from the Cristianitos Road trailhead.
Camp Pendleton: The Freeway Gap
Camp Pendleton covers about 17 miles of coast between San Clemente and Oceanside with no public coastal road. Take I-5, which moves quickly outside rush hour.
Cyclists with proper ID can ride designated routes through the base. Drivers exit at Oceanside Harbor Drive to rejoin the coast.
North County San Diego to La Jolla
On Coast Highway 101 the towns are smaller and the stops come every few minutes.
Oceanside, Carlsbad, and Encinitas
Oceanside Pier is one of the longest wooden piers on the West Coast. In Carlsbad, walk the seawall at Carlsbad State Beach at sunset; in spring, The Flower Fields east of I-5 bloom with ranunculus.
Beach Terrace Inn bills itself as Carlsbad’s only beachfront hotel. In Leucadia and Encinitas, find taco shops and Swami’s surf break below the Self-Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens.
Cardiff, Solana Beach, and Del Mar
Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach is a low-key beach access, and Powerhouse Park in Del Mar has a grassy bluff for picnics. Del Mar Dog Beach, north of the river mouth, allows off-leash dogs most of the year.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve
Torrey Pines protects one of the rarest US pines on sandstone bluffs. The Guy Fleming Trail is short and easy; the Razor Point and Beach Trails descend to the sand.
The upper lot fills early. No food outside the beach, no dogs, and stay on trails.
La Jolla
Walk from La Jolla Cove to the Children’s Pool to see protected harbor seals and sea lions. Keep your distance.
