Best Mammoth Base Lodge for Beginners
Mammoth has three main base areas. Your lodging usually decides which one you use.
Main Lodge
Main Lodge, at about 8,900 feet, has the biggest ski school hub, rentals, a learning area and the Panorama Gondola. It is the busiest base and the most exposed to wind.
Canyon Lodge and The Village
Canyon Lodge connects to The Village at Mammoth by the free Village Gondola and has beginner terrain nearby. The Village Lodge is steps from the gondola.
Eagle Lodge
Eagle Lodge, near Juniper Springs Resort, has easier parking, a mellow learning area and wide groomers nearby.
Booking Ski and Snowboard Lessons at Mammoth
Take a lesson on day one. Mammoth’s ski and ride school runs group and private lessons, and beginner packages bundle a lesson, lift access and rentals.
Book early for holidays and spring break.
Ski Rentals on the Mountain vs. in Town
Rent at the base lodges or in Mammoth Lakes. Mountain rentals are simplest with a lesson package; renting the night before at Footloose Sports or Kittredge Sports skips the morning line.
Boots should be snug without pressure points.
Mammoth Lift Tickets and Passes
Mammoth is on the Ikon Pass. For one trip, buy tickets online in advance; window prices are higher.
Beginner packages are often the best value.
What to Wear Skiing at Mammoth
Layer up and skip cotton.
- Moisture-wicking base layer
- Fleece or light insulated mid layer
- Waterproof jacket and pants
- One pair of ski socks
- Waterproof gloves or mittens
- Goggles and a helmet
- Sunscreen
- Neck gaiter
Handling the Altitude in Mammoth Lakes
The town is near 7,900 feet. Coastal visitors often get headaches or sleep badly the first night.
Arrive the afternoon before, drink water and limit alcohol. A worsening headache with nausea or confusion means rest and go lower.
Driving to Mammoth in Winter
From Los Angeles it is 5 to 6 hours up Highway 395; see my Los Angeles to Mammoth road trip. From the Bay Area, Tioga Pass is closed in winter, so take I-80 or US-50 and drive south on 395 through Nevada.

Where to Stay for a First Ski Trip
The Village Lodge and The Westin Mammoth are near the Village Gondola. Juniper Springs Resort is by Eagle Lodge, and Tamarack Lodge in the Lakes Basin has cross-country trails out the door.

June Mountain and Non-Ski Days
June Mountain, 20 minutes north, is smaller and quieter. Access is often included with Mammoth passes; confirm first.
On rest days, Woolly’s Tube Park has tubing lanes and Tamarack Lodge has cross-country and snowshoe trails.

January through March has the most reliable snow. April and May have softer snow.
