Hearst Castle sits on a hilltop above San Simeon on Highway 1, about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. William Randolph Hearst built it from 1919 to 1947 with architect Julia Morgan, the first woman licensed as an architect in California.

Hearst Castle Basics: Location, Drive Times and Hours
The visitor center is on Hearst Castle Road off Highway 1 in San Simeon. It’s about 4 hours from Los Angeles and San Francisco, 2 hours 20 minutes from Santa Barbara and 45 minutes from San Luis Obispo. Cambria is 15 minutes south.
You can’t drive to the castle. Tours start at the visitor center, and a bus climbs about 5 miles up the hill. Tours run most days, with closures on a few major holidays.

Which Hearst Castle Tour to Book
Each tour covers a different part of the estate. Afterward you can usually walk the gardens and terraces, including the Neptune Pool and Roman Pool when open. Tour lineups change by season.
Grand Rooms Tour
Book this for a first visit. It covers the main floor of Casa Grande: the Assembly Room, the Refectory, the Morning Room and the private theater. It has the fewest stairs and sells out first.
Upstairs Suites Tour
This tour covers the private rooms upstairs, including Hearst’s Gothic Suite, his library and guest suites. It has smaller groups and many more stairs. It suits a second visit or architecture fans.
Seasonal and Specialty Tours
Seasonal options include a Cottages and Kitchen tour, evening tours with docents in period costume and December holiday twilight tours. Private group tours are also offered. Dates are limited and sell out.
How to Book Hearst Castle Tickets
Buy timed tickets through the official reservation system linked from hearstcastle.org. The Grand Rooms Tour often sells out days or weeks ahead on summer weekends, spring break and holidays. Winter weekdays are easier.
Children’s tickets are discounted and young kids are free; check current rules. Book direct, not through resellers.

What to Know About the Visitor Center
The visitor center has a café, gift shop, restrooms, exhibits on Hearst and Julia Morgan, and a theater showing a film about the estate. Parking is free.
The bus climbs through Hearst Ranch grassland with cattle, deer and wild turkeys. Zebras descended from Hearst’s private zoo still graze along Highway 1.
Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery
The rookery is a free vista point 10 minutes north of the Hearst Castle turnoff, with a paved lot off Highway 1 and a bluff boardwalk. Seals are there year round, and volunteer docents are often on hand.
Males arrive in late fall to fight for territory, and pups are born late December into February. Spring and summer are molting season.

Old San Simeon and San Simeon Pier
Across Highway 1 from the castle entrance, William Randolph Hearst Memorial State Beach is a sheltered cove with a pier, picnic tables and calm water for wading. Kayak rentals are sometimes available in summer.
Next door, Old San Simeon is the village where castle supplies were unloaded. The old Sebastian’s store building and construction warehouses still stand.
Cambria and Moonstone Beach
Cambria is 15 minutes south and the usual base for Hearst Castle. The Moonstone Beach Boardwalk follows the bluff for about a mile along Moonstone Beach Drive; look for otters in the kelp and agates at the waterline.
East Village and West Village have galleries, bakeries and tasting rooms. The Fiscalini Ranch Preserve has a bluff trail. Robin’s on Burton Drive is a good dinner stop.

- Salmon Creek Falls and Ragged Point: north of San Simeon, if Highway 1 is open
- Sand Dollar Beach: long crescent beach further north in Big Sur
Where to Stay Near Hearst Castle

Pairing Hearst Castle with Paso Robles
Paso Robles is 45 minutes to an hour inland from Cambria on Highway 46 West, over the Santa Lucia Range. Tasting rooms on 46 West and in the Adelaida District start right over the hill.
