Napa or Sonoma? This 3-day wine country itinerary covers both: Carneros bubbles, St. Helena, Calistoga mud baths, Sonoma Plaza, Healdsburg and where to stay.

Napa and Sonoma are neighbors separated by the Mayacamas Mountains. Napa is compact, with large estates and cabernet; Sonoma County is larger, with family wineries and pinot noir.
This plan spends two days in Napa Valley and one in Sonoma, with notes on reservations, lodging and getting around.

Day 1: Downtown Napa, Carneros and the Silverado Trail
Start with breakfast at Oxbow Public Market, a food hall on the river in downtown Napa.
Sparkling Wine in Carneros
Carneros, 15 minutes away, grows sparkling wine grapes, pinot noir and chardonnay. Domaine Carneros pours on a terrace over the vines.
Dinner in Yountville
In Yountville, Bouchon Bistro serves French food, and Bouchon Bakery next door sells pastries.
Day 2: St. Helena and Calistoga
St. Helena, north on Highway 29, has a walkable main street. Lunch at Gott’s Roadside or get English muffins at The Model Bakery.
Schramsberg Cave Tour
Schramsberg Vineyards, just south of Calistoga, ages sparkling wine in 1800s caves. Tours are by reservation.
Calistoga Mud Baths and Hot Springs
Book a mud bath at Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort and Mineral Springs or a soak at Indian Springs Calistoga.

Day 3: Sonoma Valley and Healdsburg
The town of Sonoma is 30 minutes from downtown Napa on Highway 12/121. From up-valley, the Oakville Grade leads to Glen Ellen.
Sonoma Plaza and Gundlach Bundschu
Sonoma Plaza is lined with tasting rooms. Gundlach Bundschu, founded in 1858, is nearby.
Glen Ellen and Jack London State Historic Park
Jack London State Historic Park in Glen Ellen has oak woodland trails to the ruins of his Wolf House.
Healdsburg
Healdsburg is 45 minutes north. Taste on the plaza, or visit Dry Creek Valley for zinfandel and Russian River Valley for pinot noir.

Getting Around Wine Country Safely
Tasting fees are sometimes waived with a purchase. Eat breakfast and drink water between pours.
Yountville, Calistoga and Healdsburg are flat enough to bike, with rentals in each.
