Pismo Beach and Avila Beach are 10 minutes apart on the San Luis Obispo coast. Pismo has a pier, dunes and chowder; Avila is a south-facing cove, often sunny when Pismo is foggy.
Shell Beach, a hot spring and Edna Valley wine are all within 20 minutes. Pismo is about 3.5 hours from Los Angeles, 3 hours 40 minutes from San Francisco and 1.5 hours from Santa Barbara.

Best Time for a Pismo Beach and Avila Beach Weekend
September and October are best: the fog breaks, the water is warmest, and the Pismo Beach Clam Festival runs in mid-October.
May through July brings marine layer that can sit over Pismo all day while Avila clears. Winter is cheaper and is monarch season, roughly November through February.
- Day 1: Pismo Pier and downtown, Oceano Dunes, sunset at Dinosaur Caves Park
- Day 2: Bob Jones Trail to Avila Beach, Port San Luis, Avila Valley Barn, Sycamore Mineral Springs
- Extra half day: Edna Valley wine, or the monarch grove in season
Pismo Beach Pier and Downtown
The Pismo Beach Pier is at the foot of Pomeroy Avenue, with surfers on both sides and a wide flat beach to the south.
Downtown is a few blocks of surf shops and seafood.

Oceano Dunes: ATVs, Beach Driving and Oso Flaco Lake
The Oceano Dunes, south of Pismo, are one of the few places in California where you can drive on the beach.
Renting an ATV
My friends and I rented ATVs as complete beginners from Steve’s ATV Rentals on Pier Avenue in Oceano, and it exceeded our expectations.
Drivers must be at least 48 inches tall and 9 years old.
Driving on the Beach
Street-legal cars can enter at the Grand Avenue ramp in Grover Beach and the Pier Avenue ramp in Oceano for a day-use fee. Four-wheel drive is recommended beyond the hard sand near the water.
Off-highway vehicle rules here have been in legal disputes for years. Check parks.ca.gov for current access.
Oso Flaco Lake Boardwalk
Oso Flaco Lake, farther south, bans vehicles. A boardwalk crosses the lake and dunes to the ocean, about 2 miles round trip, with herons and pelicans.
Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove
Thousands of western monarchs winter in a eucalyptus grove off Highway 1 at the north end of Pismo State Beach, next to North Beach Campground. The season runs roughly November through February, peaking late November and December.
Entry is free, with a small parking area on the highway. Docents often set up spotting scopes.
Shell Beach: Tide Pools and Dinosaur Caves Park
Shell Beach is the bluff-top neighborhood just north of downtown Pismo. Ocean Boulevard runs along the edge, with benches and stairways to rocky coves.
Dinosaur Caves Park
Dinosaur Caves Park is a blufftop lawn with a playground and sunset views.
The caves aren’t reachable on foot. Kayak tours from Shell Beach, such as Central Coast Kayaks, paddle into them on calm days.
Shell Beach Tide Pools
Stairways off Ocean Boulevard, including at Margo Dodd Park, lead to coves with tide pools. Go at low tide, ideally a negative tide in winter or spring.
Cave Landing on the Way to Avila
Cave Landing, between Shell Beach and Avila, is a rocky point with an overlook and a sea cave framing Avila Bay. The paths down are steep and crumbly.
Bob Jones Trail to Avila Beach
The Bob Jones City to the Sea Trail is a paved, mostly flat walking and bike path of about 3 miles one way from the Ontario Road staging area near US-101 to Avila Beach, along San Luis Obispo Creek.
Avila Beach, Port San Luis and Avila Valley Barn
Avila Beach is a south-facing cove with a promenade on Front Street. Hills block wind and fog.
Avila Beach and Front Street
Front Street has lunch and drinks by the sand. Avila Pier has been closed for repairs in recent years, so check first.
Port San Luis and the Harford Pier
At the end of Avila Beach Drive, you can drive onto the Harford Pier at Port San Luis. Sea lions and sea otters are common in the harbor.
Mersea’s on the pier serves fish and chips, and Olde Port Inn is at the end. Point San Luis Lighthouse is open by guided hike or trolley tour only; book ahead.
Avila Valley Barn
Avila Valley Barn, on Avila Beach Drive near US-101, has seasonal u-pick, pies and farm animals.
Sycamore Mineral Springs and Edna Valley Wine
Both are 15 to 20 minutes from Pismo.

Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort rents private outdoor hot tubs on an oak hillside by the hour. Book ahead for evenings and weekends.

Edna Valley Wine Tasting
Edna Valley, on Highway 227 southeast of San Luis Obispo, is known for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Start with Tolosa, Chamisal Vineyards and Claiborne & Churchill; Talley Vineyards is nearby in the Arroyo Grande Valley.

Where to Stay in Pismo Beach and Shell Beach
Vespera Resort on Pismo Beach, Autograph Collection is on the sand next to the pier, walkable to downtown. SeaCrest OceanFront Hotel, on the bluffs at the north end of town, has ocean views and a pool for less.
