The Five Channel Islands Compared
The park has five islands: Santa Cruz, Anacapa, Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Santa Barbara. Santa Cruz and Anacapa are closest, with the most boats.
For a first visit, pick Santa Cruz Island: the most hiking, kayaking and the easiest campground.

How to Get to Channel Islands National Park
Island Packers runs boats from Ventura Harbor and Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard. Ventura Harbor is about 40 minutes south of Santa Barbara on US-101.
Island Packers Boats From Ventura and Oxnard
Most Santa Cruz trips land at Scorpion Anchorage, about an hour from Ventura; some go to Prisoners Harbor. Expect dolphins and sea lions, gray whales in winter, humpback and blue whales in summer.
Spring and summer weekends sell out. Book the boat first, then the campsite.
Flights to the Islands
Flights to Santa Rosa Island have been offered in the past but change. Check the nps.gov transportation page.

There are no services once the boat leaves.
A Day Trip to Santa Cruz Island
A Scorpion Anchorage day trip gives 4 to 6 hours ashore for Cavern Point, Potato Harbor or a guided kayak tour. Bring water and lunch.
Camping on the Channel Islands
Scorpion Canyon Campground on Santa Cruz is about half a mile from the pier, with potable water, picnic tables and fox-proof food boxes. Water Canyon on Santa Rosa also has water.
Anacapa, Santa Barbara, San Miguel and the Del Norte site on Santa Cruz have no water. Reserve campsites on Recreation.gov separately from the boat; see the California car camping guide for gear.
Best Hikes on Santa Cruz Island and Anacapa
Santa Cruz hikes start at Scorpion Anchorage. Anacapa has about 2 miles of trail on the east islet.
- Cavern Point Loop (Santa Cruz): about 2 miles, cliff views
- Potato Harbor (Santa Cruz): about 5 miles round trip to a cove overlook
- Scorpion Canyon Loop (Santa Cruz): about 4.5 miles, canyon and ridge
- Smugglers Cove (Santa Cruz): about 7.5 miles round trip, hot and exposed, to a cobble beach
- Inspiration Point (Anacapa): 157 stairs up from the landing
Kayaking and Snorkeling the Channel Islands Sea Caves
Santa Cruz Island has dozens of sea caves. Painted Cave on the north shore, one of the largest in the world, is usually seen on special boat trips.
Most people take a guided kayak tour from Scorpion Anchorage; nps.gov lists permitted outfitters. Snorkeling is clearest in late summer and fall; the sea caves and coastal kayaking guide compares it with La Jolla.
Wildlife and Leave No Trace on the Islands
Island foxes and ravens steal food. Use campground food boxes, never leave packs unattended and never feed wildlife.
Give seals, sea lions and nesting birds space, especially on Anacapa during western gull nesting in spring and summer. Pack out all trash and clean shoes and gear beforehand to avoid bringing seeds or pests.

The park is open year-round. Spring has wildflowers, summer has calmer seas and whales, fall has the clearest water.
