Carmel-by-the-Sea is a one-square-mile village with no street addresses and 41 courtyards and passageways.

Best Time to Visit Carmel-by-the-Sea
September and October have the least fog and fewer crowds. June and July mornings are often gray and cool.
Friday Evening: Sunset on Carmel Beach
Walk down Ocean Avenue to Carmel Beach for sunset. Dogs can run off leash under voice control.
Book dinner a week or two ahead.

Saturday Morning: Hiking Point Lobos
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is 10 minutes south, with short, flat trails and gray whales from December to April. See my Point Lobos guide.
Where to Park for Point Lobos
Lots inside fill early on weekends, so arrive at opening or park legally on the Highway 1 shoulder. There’s a day-use fee for cars; check parks.ca.gov for hours.
Best Trails at Point Lobos
Linking three or four trails takes 2 to 3 hours.
- Cypress Grove Trail: 0.8 mile loop through one of two natural Monterey cypress groves in the world
- Sea Lion Point Trail: short and easy, sea lions on the offshore rocks
- Bird Island Trail: to China Cove and Gibson Beach
- South Shore Trail: tide pools and rock formations
Saturday Afternoon: Carmel Village, Courtyards and the Mission
The passageways off Ocean Avenue hold galleries, tasting rooms and cafés.

Fairy Tale Cottages
The 1920s Hugh Comstock cottages, including the Hansel and Gretel houses, are around Torres Street and 6th Avenue.

Tasting rooms on Dolores Street and San Carlos Street pour Carmel Valley and Santa Lucia Highlands wines, all within a few blocks.
Carmel Mission
Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Río Carmelo, a mile south of Ocean Avenue, is where Junípero Serra is buried.
Sunday Morning: Driving 17-Mile Drive
17-Mile Drive is a private road through Pebble Beach with a per-vehicle entry fee. Enter at the Carmel Gate and drive north; allow 1.5 to 3 hours.
A minimum spend at a Pebble Beach Resorts restaurant usually refunds the fee.

Sunday Afternoon: Carmel Valley Wine Country
Carmel Valley Village, 20 minutes inland, is often 10 to 20 degrees warmer than the coast. Taste at two or three wineries and lunch at Corkscrew Café.
Garland Ranch Hike
Garland Ranch Regional Park is off Carmel Valley Road. Trails cross the Carmel River and climb into oak woodland.

Villa Mara Carmel is walkable to the village, and the Cypress Inn is dog-friendly.

Street parking is time limited; the Vista Lobos lot at Torres and 3rd allows all day.

Is Carmel-by-the-Sea worth a weekend trip?
Yes. Two days covers Carmel Beach, Point Lobos, the village and 17-Mile Drive or Carmel Valley. A third day adds Big Sur.
Do you need reservations for Point Lobos?
No, but parking inside fills early on weekends. Arrive at opening and check parks.ca.gov for hours and fees.
Is Carmel-by-the-Sea dog friendly?
Yes. Dogs can run off leash on Carmel Beach, and many inns, shops and patios allow them. Dogs aren’t allowed at Point Lobos.
How much does 17-Mile Drive cost?
There’s a per-vehicle fee, usually refunded with a minimum spend at a Pebble Beach Resorts restaurant. Check the Pebble Beach website for the current amount.
How far is Carmel from Big Sur?
Bixby Bridge is about 25 minutes south and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park about 45 minutes. Check Caltrans QuickMap for Highway 1 closures.
Does Carmel have street addresses?
No. Locations are given by street and cross streets, and residents collect mail at the post office.
