Where and when to see California wildflowers and superblooms, with typical peak months for each region, bloom report sources and trail etiquette.

California wildflower season moves across the state over about six months, and a field can peak and fade within ten days.
This guide lists the main bloom areas with typical peak windows. Rain, heat and wind shift them each year, so check a bloom report before you drive.

How California Wildflower Season Works
The low deserts bloom in February and March, the coastal hills and foothills in March and April, and the high Sierra in July and August.
A superbloom needs well-spaced winter rain, mild spring temperatures and little wind. Bloom reports matter more than rainfall totals.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Wildflowers
Anza-Borrego, California’s largest state park, usually blooms first, around Borrego Springs from late February into March.
Henderson Canyon Road and Di Giorgio Road north of town are the main bloom areas. The Borrego Palm Canyon Trail adds ocotillo and brittlebush, and the visitor center has a bloom map.

Death Valley National Park Wildflowers
In wet years, desert gold covers the lower elevations along Badwater Road toward Ashford Mill from late February through March.
Higher elevations bloom in April and May.
Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve
The Antelope Valley California Poppy State Natural Reserve west of Lancaster is the best-known poppy field in the state, with goldfields and owl’s clover mixed in.
About 7 miles of trails loop through it. Go before the afternoon wind.

- About 1.5 hours north of downtown Los Angeles
- Day-use parking fee; roadside parking restricted during big blooms
Carrizo Plain National Monument Superbloom
Carrizo Plain, in eastern San Luis Obispo County, is the most remote major bloom. In superbloom years the Temblor Range stripes yellow, orange and purple around Soda Lake.
No gas or food.
Central Coast and Bay Area Wildflower Hikes
Figueroa Mountain above the Santa Ynez Valley has lupine, poppies and shooting stars from March to May. It is 30 minutes from Los Olivos and pairs with 48 hours in Solvang.
In the Bay Area, try Mount Diablo State Park, the Chimney Rock Trail at Point Reyes and Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve.
High Sierra Summer Wildflowers
Tuolumne Meadows, the meadows around Mammoth Lakes and Eastern Sierra canyons bloom from late June through August with lupine, paintbrush, shooting stars and columbine.
Tioga Road usually opens in late May or June.
Superbloom Etiquette and Crowd Tips
Lake Elsinore’s Walker Canyon has closed during recent big blooms, so check the city’s status.
