Road Trip Clothing: Pack in Layers
The coast from San Francisco to Santa Barbara is often cool and foggy in summer. One small bag and a midweek laundry stop covers a week.

Car Essentials for Remote Drives

Summer and Desert Packing Extras
Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Palm Springs and the Central Valley can pass 110 degrees. Hike at dawn and tell someone your route.
Summer and fall fire restrictions often ban campfires and charcoal grills.
- A few extra gallons of water
- Cooling towel and wide-brim hat
- N95 masks for smoke
- Bug spray
Winter and Snow Packing Extras
Chain controls apply during storms at Tahoe, Mammoth, Yosemite and Sequoia, sometimes even for 4WD. Many rental companies ban chains; see my Highway 395 winter guide for control levels.
- Tire chains that fit
- Ice scraper
- Gloves, waterproof boots, wool socks
- Microspikes
- Blanket and snacks in the car
- Freeze-rated washer fluid
What to Leave at Home
Skip extra shoes and heavy jeans; Monterey, Bishop, Mammoth and Palm Springs have stores. Don’t bring firewood from home, since it spreads invasive pests.
