California Road Trip Cost: A Realistic Budget Breakdown

Ranges are for two people sharing a car and room. They cover gas, lodging, food and fees, not flights or a rental car.

California gas is among the most expensive in the US, and higher still in Big Sur, the Eastern Sierra and near national parks.

Estimate fuel as miles divided by highway mpg, times a price a little above the state average. San Francisco to Los Angeles on Highway 1 plus a Sierra loop can reach 1,200 to 1,500 miles, or 40 to 50 gallons at 30 mpg.

Motels in Mariposa, Bishop, Paso Robles and Twentynine Palms are reasonable on weeknights. Rooms in Carmel, Santa Barbara or South Lake Tahoe can double from Tuesday to Saturday in summer.

• Developed campgrounds (state parks, USFS, NPS): cheapest paid option
• Inland motels and chains: moderate, especially midweek
• Coastal hotels, park lodges, Napa and wine country inns: most expensive

Buy breakfast and lunch at a grocery store or deli and eat out once a day. Taquerias, bakeries and fruit stands are cheap.

Wine tasting fees in Napa, Sonoma and Paso Robles add up, so limit tastings in advance.

Some parks require timed entry reservations at peak times. In 2026, nonresidents started paying extra at some of the busiest parks, including Yosemite and Sequoia and Kings Canyon; check NPS.gov.

Point Lobos, Pfeiffer Big Sur and Crystal Cove charge for parking.

For fly-in trips, the rental car is often the second-biggest cost. Rates rise in summer and on holidays; San Francisco to Los Angeles one-way fees are usually modest.

A compact car handles Highway 1 and all major park roads. Winter trips to Tahoe, Mammoth or Yosemite may require chains, which many rental companies ban.

A shoulder-season week on the coast and in the Sierra. Lodging is the largest share, then food and gas.

Pull-offs, redwood groves and tide pools are free. Consider car camping for a few nights.
